TeamRankings 2020 NFL Contest Update

We’re awarding over $3,300 in prizes in our NFL Subscriber Contest this season. (Photo by Matthew Pearce/Icon Sportswire)

This year we are excited to introduce a pair of weekly free-to-play NFL picking contests, one contest for our premium subscribers and another contest for registered TeamRankings users who are not paying subscribers.

Each contest offered over $1,200 in weekly and season prizes. The contests were hosted on RunYourPool.com, a great pool hosting site and long time TeamRankings partner.

Contest Rules

The contest is an Upset Pool, and scoring is simple.

Just pick two NFL underdogs each week, and you score points if any your picks wins its game outright. You are awarded points based on your pick’s point spread value.

For example, if you pick a risky 10-point underdog, you’ll score 10 points if they win. If you play it safer and pick a 3-point underdog, your pick will have a better chance to win, but you’ll only score 3 points if they do.

That’s a wrap! The TeamRankings upset picking contests concluded with the 2020 NFL regular season.

After a few weeks of big upsets, the final week of the season featured only one minor upset in 16 games, as the Giants (+2.5) defeated the Cowboys. Thanks to everyone that participated this season!

Subscriber Contest: Weekly Results & Season Leaders

With only one upset, a whopping 18 entries tied in Week 17. This tie (and any remaining ties from prior weeks) will be a broken with a Wild Card Round tiebreaker contest this coming week.

In addition, there remains a 7-way tie from Week 16.

Week 16 Contest Recap

Week 16 was another big one for upsets, led by the streaking Jets (+9.5) and Bengals (+8.5). Those were just two of the six upsets from the week.

Subscriber Contest: Weekly Results & Season Leaders

13 entries tied with a max possible 18.0 points by picking the Jets and Bengals in Week 16, so the tiebreaker will carry over to Week 17. The tied entries were ARPOMonkeys, Biggie12, BT811, Corkball Mike, dstrassho, GM4343, Jgalloway14, Joe F, Kjmorgan6, melnyckgottogo, Mocha’s Dad, RickLife, and Tazman185.

The 2-way tie from Week 15 also remained between 2FatsO and arianna, but Erik2444 broke the Week 14 tie to win a weekly prize.

Week 15 Contest Recap

When the story of the 2020 TeamRankings Upset Pool is written, Week 15 will likely receive the longest chapter after two enormous upsets after the Jets (+16.5) got their first win and the Bengals (+12.5) upset the Steelers. Those were two of the week’s five total upsets.

Subscriber Contest: Weekly Results & Season Leaders

Week 15 of the Subscriber Contest featured a 2-way tie for first place, with 2FaTsO and arianna each scoring an incredible 29.0 points by picking the Jets and Bengals. The high scores also vaulted both entries into the top five overall leaderboard.

In addition, the 4-way tie from Week 14 was cut down to two teams, with Erik2444 and PatrickJ117 both scoring 3.5 points. Both tiebreakers will carry over to Week 16.

For the second consecutive week, the NFL slate featured five upsets. Easily the biggest upset was the Eagles (+7.5) beating the Saints.

Week 13 featured five upsets and a few other close calls. The biggest upset of the week was the Giants (+9.5) over the Seahawks, with Washington (+8.5) close behind after their upset of the unbeaten Steelers.

The Week 11 slate had five upsets, headlined by the Cowboys 31-28 win over Minnesota as 8.5-point underdogs in our upset pool. The Titans also upset the Ravens as 6.5-point underdogs.

The Subscriber Contest featured a 10-way tie for first place this week, as BigStick22, birducci, gkrebbs, jdh2106, laterlaw, mgags23, Slam Duncan, turfeyejoe, twong1987, and wadebobb each scored 15.0 points with their Dallas and Tennessee pick tandem.

However, weekly ties from Week 9 and Week 10 were decided, as gkrebbs scored 15.0 points to win Week 9 (and the $50 Amazon gift card), and erniedi1215 tallied 8.5 points to claim Week 10.

Week 10 Contest Recap

Week 10 saw only three upsets, led by New England’s win over Baltimore as 7.5-point underdogs in our upset pool. While there were several other close calls, the Giants (+3.5) and Colts (+1.5) were the only other upsets.

The Subscriber Contest featured a 4-way tie for first place in Week 10, as eaglegp23, erniedi1215, teambud33, and teleport1 each netted 11.0 points by picking the Patriots and Giants.

In addition, the 2-way tie from Week 9 remained between gkrebbs and TBlight. However, we were able to crown a winner for Week 8, with AdamB scoring 7.5 points and taking home the $50 Amazon gift card.

There were five upsets in Week 9, plus several more squeakers. The biggest upset was the Saints (+5.5) road demolition of the Bucs on Sunday night, followed by the Dolphins (+4.5) upset of the Cardinals in the Josh Rosen Bowl.

Week 8 was a fun one for upset pools, with seven upsets in all. According to the contest pool’s spreads, the biggest upset among them was Minnesota (+6.5) over Green Bay, followed by Cincinnati (+5.5) over Tennessee.

Week 2 Contest Recap

Incredibly, there was only one upset in NFL Week 2, which happened on Monday night when the Raiders defeated the Saints 31-21.

(Technically the Rams also upset the Eagles based on closing betting lines, but when the Week 2 point spreads in our contests were set, the Rams were a very slim favorite.)

With only one Week 2 upset, there is now a 52-way tie in the User Contest and a 50-way tie in the Subscriber Contest for the Week 2 prize! Per the contest rules, the tiebreaker for those tied entries will be their Week 3 score.

UPDATE (Tue 9/29): After the Week 3 tiebreaker, a 5-way tie still remains in both contests. So now we continue on to the Week 4 score to determine the Week 2 winner.
